Hillary Garrison Waldrip/Waldrop/Waltrip/Waldrep, who served in the 16th Alabama, was my second great uncle. By the way, he lost the election.

From the Moulton Advertiser (Lawrence County) 25 May 1905:

-------------------------------------------------
Dear Editor of The Moulton Advertiser: Will you print this one letter for me? I am stating to the public of Lawrence county that I am out for Sheriff at the next election. I have never asked for any office in my past life, and I am now 63 years old.
I, H.G. Waldrep, entered the civil war at the age of 17 years and 6 months old. In Aug. 1860[sic] I joined the army at Courtland, Co. B; served three years of hard labor and hard fighting on starvation part of the time, but never flickered. My brothers were in Co. I, wanting to go to them me and Henry Parker changed companies, where I remained until the war closed.
I got shot several times and badly wounded. The first battle I was in was at Fishing Creek, but only got my shoe heel shot off there. Next at Chiamauga[sic], where I got shot through the neck and was badly wounded;?but I still liked the Gray; and on the 22nd of July, 1864, I got shot through the foot and both thighs, also through the bowels at the same time?all in the same battle. I got one knee shot off.
Those shots through my legs gives me great pain at times.
I was wounded 7 times and if any one doubts it if they will come to me I will show them each bullet wound.
So now dear people of Lawrence county will you please give me your attention in the next election for Sheriff?
My legs have become so weak that they give down on me before night in plowing and that is all the way I have got to make a living.
I hope to meet with one and all before the appointed day.
I have always been a whole-souled Rebel and a Democrat. This is my standing now and always has been.
So hoping to see you all or all I I[sic] can see before the time rolls around, I remain yours a good Democrat and your friend,

H.G. Waldrep,

Edmond, Ala.
