Several of these men enlisted in units from other parts of Alabama. The most likely candidate enlisted in Co. "F", 49th Alabama. This command went to Nashville in January 1862 and camped there long enough for a number of men to become ill before the city was given up to the Federals in late February. Transportation to Murfreesboro and points south made the situation worse, and many of these men died. There was quite a bit of disease after the Battle of Shiloh when the regiment was in Mississippi. They went south with the Kentucky "Orphan" Brigade and fought at Baton Rouge. Quite a number of men lost during this period.

Oden's Company was recruited as a local defense company from St. Clair County in late 1863-early 1864.
