Two Union Generals from Alabama

I'm sure that this is old news to some of you, but I just learned this, and thought that I would share it:

BIRNEY, David Bell; Maj. Gen., USA
Born May 29 1825 in Huntsville, Ala. Admitted to Pennsylvania Bar in 1856. April 1861 Lt. Col. in 23rd Pennsylvania, August 1861 Col., February 1862 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, commanded a brigade in 3rd Divn/III Corps, Peninsula campaign, Seven Pines, Chantilly, commanded 1st Divn/III Corps at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, May 1863 promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers, Gettysburg, commanded 3rd Divn/II Corps at Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, commanded X Corps Died of at home of malaria 10/8/1864. Buried in Philadelphia's Woodlands Cemetery.

BIRNEY, William; Brev. Maj. Gen., U.S.V.
Born May 28 1819, Madison County, Ala. Before the war he was a lawyer, writer, and a newspaper owner. May 1861 Capt., First Bull Run, September 1861 Maj. of 4th New Jersey, Peninsula campaign, Seven Days, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, January 1863 Col., Chancellorsville, May 1863 appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers and Col. of 22nd US Colored Infantry, recruited regiments of black troops, served in Florida, commanded 3rd Divn/X Corps, Chaffin's Farm, commanded 2nd Divn/XXV Corps, Appotomattox campaign. After the war, he was a lawyer, U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, and a writer. He died on August 14 1907 at Forest Glen, MD.

Note: these two were brothers, sons of James Gillespie Birney. They moved from Madison County, Ala. to Cincinnatti in 1838, then to Michigan, and then to Philadelphia.
