Never mentioned in news articles discussing the removal of the JLM Curry statue from the US capitol is Curry's Confederate service. In 1865, he commanded the 5th Alabama cavalry as lieutenant colonel, Col. Patterson's brigade, Gen. Roddey's division. He led the regiment in the battles with Col. Palmer's raiders at Pond Spring, Town creek, LaGrange (almost captured), and Russellville; and with Gen. Wilson's raiders at Elyton, Hillsboro, Montevallo, Six Mile, Ebenezer Church, Plantersville (shot, uninjured), and Selma. The 5th Alabama faced both raiding columns alone at times. Curry's gallant military service to the state of Alabama should be remembered as well as his service as a civilian.
