Capt. B.B. McCaa's Frock Coat

This just came online, and I thought some of you may be interested in seeing a well preserved uniform worn by an Alabama cavalry company. At http://www.civilwarpreservations.com/newmus181.html, you can see Capt. Burwell Boykin McCaa's frock coat. There are several images.

McCaa raised an independent company of cavalry troopers in Pickens County, Ala. in March 1861 called "McCaa's Raiders". After about six months, McCaa's Raiders joined Pope Walker Troopers. McCaa’s company was Company B of this unit and the company changed its name to "McCaa Rangers". This unit became the 2nd Battalion Mississippi Cavalry and then 2nd Mississippi and Alabama Regiment. It is also referred to in records of the Battle of Shiloh as the Mississippi and Alabama Battalion. McCaa's company eventually became Company D of the 8th Confederate Light-Horse Cavalry.

As a sidenote, Gen. Allen Christopher Oxford initially served with this company. Later in the war, he served on the staff of Gen. Wheeler, and was aide-de-camp to Gen. Humes. After the war, he served as Commander of the Camp Hardee Chapter, and as Commander of the 4th Ala. Brigade, of the U.C.V. It is unknown to me how/when he obtained the appellation of "General", as that is not a U.C.V. rank (to the best of my knowledge) and I can find no evidence that he attained that rank while in service. It was also not an honorary rank conferred by the State of Alabama after the war. He may have served in the State Militia, or some similar organization, in that capacity. Most all postwar references to Oxford use the appellation, however.
