Is Captain John F. Whitfield, who commanded Company K of the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment 1862-1865, "The John Gill Shorter Artillery"....one and the same man as the John F. Whitfield who served as 1st Sergeant in Company C of the 3rd Alabama Infantry Regiment during 1861? I think so.
I located the burial obelisk of John F. Whitfield, March 16, 1837 - April 24, 1891, a Confederate Officer and husband of Leonora Chamberlin Sanders, died Sept. 7, 1906.
There is a CSA marker at the foot of his obelisk, probably placed by the UDC, which states...
JF WHITFIELD
CORP 3 ALA REGT INF
CONFEDERATE STATES ARMY
1835 - 1891
These birth and death years were apparently taken from a 2nd obelisk in the same plot for several SANDERS children who are listed on each side of the obelisk, with J.F. WHITFIELD 1835 - 1891 inscribed on the forward face.
I'm pretty sure this is Captain Whitfield of the John Gill Shorter Artillery...can anyone confirm?
