J.W. Rush's company of "Macon County Rifles" was Co. C of the 1st Ala., Tenn., and Miss. Infantry, which was later called the 4th Confederate Infantry. This unit was under Col. Alpheus Baker of Barbour County, Alabama.

"February, 1862, ordered from Fort Pillow to New Madrid. March 21, at Madrid Bend, 772 present and absent. During the Federal siege and bombardment March and April, 1862, they were in the works at Island No. l0, at first under command of Gen. A. P. Stewart. Nearly all the officers and men were surrendered April 8, 1862." (from Dunbar Rowland’s "Military History of Mississippi, 1803-1898")

After this, the unit was merged with the 40th Tenn. Inf. to form the 50th Ala. Inf., which was later redesignated as the 54th Ala. Inf. Regt. Rush's company became Company G.

John H. Christian was a later commander of this company. I don't have information on whether Rush and Christian were captains, but I would assume that they were.

See Dr. Ken Jones' website for further information on the 54th at http://www.tarleton.edu/~kjones/54alinf.html
