Desertions? Shouldn't that be resignations? Officers could resign enlisted men had to desert! The majority of Southern enlisted men in the US army remained loyal to the federal government. They knew full well that if they joined the Confederate forces and were captured they would be hung while officers in similar circumstances would be treated as POWs.
