"Few old vessels in or around Pensacola...have a more interesting record than that of the old fishing smack Four Friends, which was recently saved from a watery resting place in Pensacola bay, having gone down during the storm of August 15...Where she was built, or who constructed her, has never been learned, nor is it probable that it ever will be." The vessel, formerly known as the Stonewall, was reputed to have been active in the slave trade near Savannah and Brunswick...She had also been a Confederate gunboat until taken by the Federal gunboat, DeSoto. After the war she was reputed to have been used for smuggling, near Key West.
