Re: 5th AL Battalion at Petersburg
In Response To: 5th AL Battalion at Petersburg ()

Jim, I've never seen any references to the 5th Battalion being involved at the Crater. The regiments of Wilcox's old brigade, under Col. John C. C. Sanders, are the only Alabamians I know of who were there. When Fulton refers to the camp west of Petersburg, he is speaking of the Upper Appomattox Canal. The battalion was A. P. Hill's HQ guard during the winter of 1864-1865, and Hill had his headquarters at that time were at "Indiana," the John P. Knight house, on the western outskirts of Petersburg. It makes sense that the battalion's camp would have been near "Indiana."
