Re: Battle/Skirmish Engagement Question

This was a fight running between the 30th of March 1865 and the 1st of April 1865. Technically, White Oak Road was a "sub-fight" of the Five Forks engagement, which in itself is generally considered a part of the Appomattox Campaign. Basically, Phil Sheridan was attempting to turn the Confederate right flank and force them out of their Petersburg defenses. Leading a force of cavalry (13,000 men) and infantry (II and V Corps), he advanced against Lee's 19,000 cavalry and infantry under Pickett at Five Forks.

Pickett had a 3 mile "gap" between his position and the main Confederate line which he screened with his cavalry; his infantry was dug in along the White Oak Road, from east to west, as follows: Ransom's, Wallace's, Maryland Steuart's, Mayo's (Terry's), and Corse's brigades, all about three miles east of Five Forks.

The federal attack was successful and drove the Confederates back with a large loss. There is a pretty good description of the battle in Douglas Southall Freeman's Lee's Lieutenants, vol. III, somewhere towards the end. I don't recall the pages...
