Re: Engish's Independent Co of Mounted Inf

Alan and Hayes, to answer some questions about the article and perhaps to throw a few more things into it
1. I do not know the date of the article (year), what I have is a photocopy of the article that was found in a file folder at the archives. Although what I have is an exact photo of the article, it does not show the year, only Jan 27th.
2. It seems the list of soldiers for GB Hall's Co and English's Co are somewhat different. Although I believe this company (English's) was formed quite late in the war as I have seen no other mention or record of it. Also there are several names on the list that records show were previously in other units from Baldwin and Monroe. One example is AW Bryant who was originaly in Barlow's Company that later became part of the 15th Confederate, as the James Earle was originally in Co. E of the 23rd Ala Inf
3. All are local people from both companies, same names still right here in North Baldwin. I gave a copy of the article to a great granddaughter of Capt English and she pointed out that English was not McClellan's brother but they were related.
I Hunted all of my life on the plantation of Capt Marriott, where the Flag Bearer is said to be buried. Capt Marriot was a Yankee carpetbagger who came down after the war. Local story goes that he took a southern girl back up north after the war, and that she was not happy up there so he bought the plantation between Eliska and Purdue Hill and brought her south to try and make her happy. Story goes that no one would help them with transportation between the railroad at Atmore(?) and their home in Monroe Co. The Capt is buried outside his old home, which we used for a camp house. I did not know about the Confederate when we hunted up there, but I plan to go and see if there is a stone for him in one of the few graveyards on the property. If there is not, I plan to try and get one.Sometime in the future Fort Blakeley Camp #1864 SCV will have a dedication service, if permission is granted from the current landowner.
4. Thanks Alan for the information you suppied regarding GB Hall's Co.
