I wanted to share the biography of a soldier of the 39th NC killed at Spanish Fort, AL.

Charles HANEY, born abt 1819 in Burke, NC; died Mar/Apr 1865 in Spanish Fort, Mobile, AL He married on 14 Jan 1854 in Macon, NC Elizabeth KEENER, born abt 1829 in TN, daughter of Joseph KEENER and Rebecca (---).

BIRTH: Compiled Service Record for the 39th infantry at Raleigh Archives has a 'Form for Retiring a Soldier' in the records. On this form from 1864, Charles is petitioning to retire due to his wounds from the Battle of Chickamauga. He states he was born in Burke Co, NC.

MILITARY: 'NC Troops: 1861-1865,', Co I, 39th regiment infantry, 'Private Charles Haney born in Burke Co and resided in Macon Co where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Macon Co at age 42, 25 Mar 1862...Returned to duty prior to 19 Sep 1863 when he was wounded in both thighs at Chickamauga, GA...Killed at Spanish Fort, Mobile, AL, in March/April 1865.'

CUMBERLAND GAP, 17/18 Jun 1862
The 39th NC commanded by Col D. Coleman, was part of the 4th brigade commanded by Col A.W. Reynolds.
STONE'S RIVER, TN, 31 Dec 1862 - 2 Jan 1863, the 39th was commanded by Colonel David Coleman (wounded), Lt Col Hugh H. Davidson (wounded) and Captain Alfred W. Bell, part of Brig Gen J. Paton Anderson's 3rd brigade, Major Gen Jones M. Wither's 2nd Division, Lt Gen Leonidas Polk's Corps, General Braxton Bragg's Army of TN. Regiment losses: 2 killed, 36 wounded, 6 missing. Brigade losses: 130 killed, 620 wounded, 13 missing. This battle was a Union victory. Note: Charles was absent from this battle. He was in the hospital in Knoxville, TN.
'Alfred W. Bell Civil War Letter Collection', describes the battle in his letter of 11 Jan 1863.
VICKSBURG, MS, the 39th NC was commanded by Col David Coleman and was attached to Brig Gen Evander McNair's brigade of Major Gen Samuel G. French's division, Gen Joseph E, Johnston's Army of Relief, Dept of the West. (ref: 'The Vicksburg Campaign', by Edwin Bears, Vol III, pg 1150, Need to see this). The Vicksburg National Military Park website shows a memorial to the 39th NC. It says the regiment left Shelbyville, TN on 9 May 1863 arriving in Canton, MS 26 May 1863 and Yazoo City, MS on 10 Jun 1863. Charles probably did not participate in these battles since he was absent sick through June 1863.
CHICKAMAUGA, GA, 18-20 Sep 1863, OR, series 1, vol 30, part 1, pgs 229, the 39th NC commanded by Col D. Coleman was part of Brig Gen E. McNair's Brigade (Col David Coleman took command of the brigade when Gen McNair was disabled), Brig Gen Bushrod R. Johnson's Division, Major Gen Simon B. Buckner's Corps, attached to Longstreet's Corps 20 Sept. Part of the Army of TN commanded by Gen Braxton Bragg. This battle was a Confederate victory.
'Battles and Leaders of the Civil War', by Johnson, vol 3, pg 675. The brigade loss was 51 killed, 336 wounded, 64 missing. The regt losses were 10 killed, 90 wounded, and 3 missing.
ATLANTA, GA, 3 May - 8 Sep 1864
The 39th NC was commanded by Col D. Coleman, which was part of Brig Gen M.D. Ector's brigade, of Major Gen Samuel G. French's division, of Polk's (later Lt General A.P. Stewart after Polk was killed 14 Jun) corps, Army of Mississippi, commanded by Lt Gen Leonidas Polk.
Regimental losses at Resaca (13-15 May) 5 killed, 8 wounded, 3 missing.
Regimental losses at Lattimer's Mills (Jun 18) 6 killed, 8 wounded, 1 missing.
Regimental losses at Peachtree Creek (20 Jul) 15 killed, wounded, and missing.
This campaign was a Union victory.
ALLATOONA, GA, 5 Oct 1864
The 39th NC was commanded by Col David Coleman, part of the command of Major Gen Samuel G. French.
The Union forces were commanded by Brig Gen John M. Corse.
This battle was a Union victory.
NASHVILLE, TN 15-16 Dec 1864
The 39th NC commanded by Captain J.G. Crawford was part of Ector's brigade, which was part of French's division, which was part of Lt Gen A.P. Stewart's Corps, which was part of the Army of TN commanded by General John B. Hood.
This battle was a union victory.
SPANISH FORT, AL, 27 Mar - 8 Apr 1865
'Battles and Leaders of the Civil War, Vol 4, pg 411, 'they (the Federal's) laid seige to Spanish Fort on the 27th of March... The defense was upheld by the brigades of Ector, et al... By the 8th of April the trenches were well advanced and a bombardment was begun by ninety guns in position, joined by all of the gun boats within range.' Charles was killed at Spanish Fort about 1 month prior to the end of the war.

DEATH: Macon Co, NC estate record copied at Raleigh Archives, Elizabeth Haney was named guardian of the minor heirs of Charles Haney 15 Sep 1867.
