Re: 5th Ala Sharpshooters and Eugene Blackford

Thanks for that marvelous account!

This would be a good time to ask if anyone has a copy of the following materials listed below. If so, I'd dearly like to obtain a copy. Please contact me at walford@dbtech.net. The research fee for the library to do this is too rich for me. It would best be obtained by visiting the Maryland Historical Society Library, 201 W. Monument Street, Baltimore, MD 21201

At the http://www.mdhs.org/library/ms000398.html web page, is described the Eugene Blackford Papers of the Gordon-Blackford Papers, 1828-1889 MS 398 collection, and in particular a section (perhaps Box 7?): "In 1861 he became captain in the 5th Alabama Regiment, and his letters home contain candid comments on the handling of the war by his superiors."

There is also a description of papers in Box 9: William M. Blackford diary excerpts (1861-1864): excerpts of those diary entries dealing with Eugene Blackford's military service. Includes an address by Eugene to his former troops in 1878.

Thanks. Yours, Wm.
