For what it's worth, there is a QM Sgt. W. C. Hammond listed with the 48th AL Infantry, and there is a Sgt. J. M. McBrayer also in the 48th Infantry, Co. "B".

There is also a Pvt. John Y. McBrayer listed in the 18th AL Infantry, Co. "A", but he and Sgt. J. M. McBrayer are the only matches on the Broadfoot list.

Neither man is listed with Hardie's Battalion, but since that unit was formed late in the war, it's possible one or the other transferred to the cavalry at some point. Hardie's and the 48th are not the same unit.
