Re: Major Lionel F. Booth, 11th USCT

NY Times Oct 3, 1864 An interesting sidelight on Major Booth’s wife appeared in the Times, picking up an article in the St. Louis Democrat. It reported that “Mrs. Major Booth, widow of the gallant officer who was murdered at Fort Pillow” had been exonerated on the allegation that “while acting as Government searcher, she knowingly refrained from seizing gold purporting to be passing beyond our lines to the enemy.” The St. Louis Democrat picked up the article from the Memphis Bulletin which reported an “honorable discharge of the lady.” This exoneration must have come after Booth’s death. I would suppose her job was searching women leaving Memphis. Apparently they were well known for smuggling things out of the city under those big hoop skirts.
