Re: Original Muster Rolls 1st Ala Inf.

There may be some rolls for the regiment, but we need to know which First Alabama since most company letters changed after the twelve-month enlistments expired.

A list of field and staff appointments for the new regiment exists in a CSR for one of those officers (perhaps Steadman), who styled the new command "First Alabama Artillery". The initial regiment was always mentioned simply as "First Alabama Volunteers" and is usually listed First Alabama Infantry. Many members of Company "G" from the twelve-month regiment, which disbanded in mid-January of 1862, reenlisted as Company "A" of the 1st Alabama Artilery. Many members of Company "G", 1st Alabama Artillery, had been on roll with Company "C", 1st Alabama Volunteers.

It appears that all original rolls of the new regiment were lost at Island Ten. I'm almost certain there's a composite roll of company C/G, the "Perote Guards", at the ADAH. It would've been created after the war or during the war's last year. I haven't seen it in a number of years. Note that Edward Young McMorries, who wrote the history of the 1st Alabama, belonged to this company.
