We see that statement frequently posted but I've not noticed anything to support it in published orders of battle from the Atlanta Campaign forward. Here's a diary of a member which picks up after the fall of Atlanta:

It appears that the regiment was assigned to duty with Judson Kilpatrick, one of Sherman's favorites in his mounted arm.
