I'm sure this is an interesting story and would like to learn more.

John W. West was elected Captain of a company from Limestone County on March 12, 1862, at Athens, Alabama. Officers and men were accepted in Confederate service on March 18, 1862, and reported to camp at LaGrange Military Academy (a short distance east of Tuscumbia). Captain West and his command were designated Company “G” of the 35th Alabama Infantry Regiment, which served with the famous Kentucky "Orphans" in Mississippi in 1862.

The 35th Alabama fought at Baton Rouge LA, Corinth MS, Port Hudson LA, Champion Hill MS and Jackson MS. Transferred to Georgia in 1864, the regiment saw action in the Atlanta Campaign. At least one source states that Capt. John W. West was wounded near Atlanta, Georgia, July 28, 1864. He surrendered at Meridian, Mississippi, May 11, 1865.
