Re: Dr G.W.Griggs

The 5th Alabama Cavalry citation for this man is curious. The only note shows his parole taken by Federal authorities at Brenham (?) TX in August 1865. He signs as Surgeon of the 5th Ala. Cav. and gives his residence as Washington County TX.

I don;t know Mississippi units but suspect the reference to Co. "E", 10th Mississippi Infantry may be productive. That regiment served at Shiloh in Chalmers' Brigade. The 5th Alabama Cavalry didn't organize for another eight months after the battle.

If this man really held an appointment as Surgeon of the 5th Cavalry, it must have come late in the war. Previous surgeons of this command were H. M. Welch, appointed surgeon in 1863, and Robert Townes Abernathy, appointed Surgeon April 12, 1864; to rank May 15, 1863.
