Union forts in Limestone County

I am presently gathering information for a paper to be presented for the Phi Alpha Theta conference at Athens State University, in April. I am trying to find some information about two forts, manned by black Union soldiers, that were built in Limestone County. I know that one was in Athens and the other in Elkmont. I am looking for information on the following:
1) Geographical locations of both
2) Reaction of the black soldiers' presence.
3) The presence of Confederate troops, spies, ect. to observe the activities of the forts.
4) Any activity of interest; skirmishes, ect...
5) Were these forts erected to observe Confederates trying to stop the Union's attempt to block the RR?

Thank you for any information that you can provide, or any place that I can go to get this information.
