The Elliott map shows 22 Confederate dead buried near the estimated position of the 48th Alabama as it emerged from the woodline in front of Little Round Top, but three times that many southern graves are shown in the vicinity. Few or none of these dead appear to have been identified; some of those in Law's brigade that were carried back to a field hospital before succumbing to their wounds were reinterred after the war in the south, mainly to Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, and I suppose most of the 48th's dead who fell in front of Little Round Top were also sent to Hollywood Cemetery, circa 1872. Perhaps a few graves in remote spots of the field escaped detection and the soldiers lie there still--heavy rains after the battle washed away evidence. Just a few years ago the bones of a Union soldier were uncovered near the railroad cut on the first day's battlefield, in a location right out in the open. Also of note, the National Park Service recently cleared a forest that had grown up beyond the original woodline where the 48th fought, so it's now possible to see the field much as it was when the battle took place. Power lines and a restroom that had been placed near that spot have also been removed, courtesy of the Gettysburg Foundation.
