Jim: In my GGfather's (Mike) letters home he tells his wife frequently about someone from home coming to pick up the remains for burial at home. In some cases the individual was a slave.
Mike's brother in a different regiment who was killed near Atlanta. His body is buried in a family cemetery in southeast Alabama.I would believe this is not unusual.
