In most cases wartime burials of Confederate soldiers are not marked, or if they are marked, the name is listed as unknown. Soldiers who died on the battlefield were often buried in mass graves. Those who died in hospitals received simple wooden markers which didn't last long. For example there must be several thousand Confederate burials in and around Corinth MS, but no one knows where they are.

There are exceptions, such as Confederate burials in the Richmond VA area. Many who were buried in the cities of Richmond and Petersburg can be identified. Another site is Franklin, TN, where members of the MacGavock family went to extraordinary lengths to provide marked burials for Confederate dead left on on the field. Burials of Confederate prisoners of war are usually marked. Other responders can provide more examples of identified burial sites.

During the last few days people have mentioned the possibiity of family members retrieving remains and bringing them home. In the vast majority of cases, information about the death of a famiily member in the army did not come for some time after the actual date of death. The means for travel and transportation were tremendously difficult for most families, who might be hundreds of miles away from the supposed burial site. Travel in many areas was far from secure, and places to find food and shelter were limited. Obviously the most difficult task would be to locate the right burial site among hundreds, even thousands of others which looked exactly alike.

Most of the markers for Confederate dead in family or hometown cemeteries are there as memorials, not grave markers.

In most cases we don't know what happened to our Confederate ancestors, let alone where they are buried. Just the facts, ma'm.
