Try the Guide to the Archives of the Government of the Confederate States of America which should be available at most larger libraries. It discusses records of the Confederate government and what happened to them.

In the case of the Selma works, it says that "when Selma was captured by U.S. forces on Apr. 2, 1865, Commander [Catesby Ap] Jones escaped with the foundry records" Then it continues, "records of the Naval Gun Foundry and Ordnance works that were in the care of Commander Jones at the end of the war are now in the Naval Records Collection." (record group 45) There follow details of what records actually exist, including details of each gun cast and where it was sent.

Records in other custody include some in the the AL Dept of Archives and History, the Texas Archives, and the University of Texas Library. Descriptions of exactly what are included.

There are a couple of books/articles suggested:

  • W.S. Mabry, Brief sketch of the career of Captain Catesby Ap Jones (Selma, 1912)

  • Walter W. Stephens, "The Brooke Guns from Selma," Alabama Historical Quarterly, 20:462-475 (Fall, 1958)

  • William N. Still, jr., "Selma and the Confederate States Navy," Alabama Review, 15:19-37 (Jan 1962)
