You mention that Levi Kyser died during the Petersburg Campaign. A roster of Company B of the 44th Alabama, known as the "Scottsville Guards" list Levi Kyser and under comments says killed Fussell's Mill "conspicuous for bravery." Fussell's Mill is also known as Deep Bottom II. A Union force under Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock crossed the James River. On August 16, 1864 Union assaults near Fussell's Mill were initially successful, but Confederate counterattacks drove the Federals out of a line of captured works. After continual skirmishing, the Federals returned to the southside of the James, maintaining their bridgehead at Deep Bottom. One source on the internet states that estimated casualties were 4,600 from August 13-20?
Was there any verbal or written family history about Levi's role in this Confederate victory? Deep Bottom II is not a battle that people know much about.
