Re: 44th Alabama at Devil's Den

Davis,

I only stumbled across the war details of Levi Kyzer while looking for info on Paul. I have a genealogy done by a modern day Kyzer who lives in Central Arkansas. As I understand it, several Kyzer brothers migrated to Jacksonville Ark. some time after the war. One of their brothers was father to my Great Grandfather, Abraham Kyzer who had two grocery stores at the edge of North Little Rock; my Dad worked for him for a few years as a teen ager. There are Many Kyzers there to this day and they all had their roots in Alabama.
From what I have observed, there couldn't have been many regiments North or South who were as ground- up in the war as the 44th. MOST died, it seems.
As a separate question, I have read that Longstreet's right-most wing was tired and worn out and dehydrated when they reached Devil's Den, The Slaughter Pen et cet,, including Joshua Chamberlain at LRT. I've wondered if that late afternoon heat over the 1.5 miles they fought sapped them to the extent that the 20th Maine was relatively fresh for battle and found it "easier" to carry the day. Have you ever heard anyone touch on this?
