Re: 44th Alabama at Devil's Den

Law's Brigade broke camp near New Guilford Courthouse PA about 4:00 AM on July 2nd, reaching the Gettysburg area at 2:00 PM. This march covered some twenty-five miles. Further time was expended marching in one direction and then the opposite before the brigade reached its designated position. Standing and moving; moving and standing during the heat of the afternoon probably drained the men of their remaining energy. A detail had been sent to Spangler's Spring for water just before the order to advance was given. The men in the canteen detail never rejoined the brigade during the fighting, and the Alabama soldiers went into battle without water.
