Re: confederate regiments at Little Round Top

Unless I am mistaken, and please correct me if I'm wrong, Col. William C. Oates' 15th Alabama was the unit that went up LRT several times on 2 July, only to be driven back down by Col Chamberlains' 20th Maine, the final time by a bayonet charge, as the Maine men ran low on ammo. Many years ago, I had the opportunity to hear Bill Rambo, who is the director of Confederate Memorial Park in Marbury, AL, give a wonderful and passionate lecture on this very subject. If I remember correctly, the 15th Alabama had just finished a forced march, along dusty roads, in sweltering heat, lugging all of their gear. At the end of the march, Several men were appointed to collect canteens and go for water. Before they could return, the 15th was ordered up LRT. Heat and dehydration most certainly played a roll in the 15th being repulsed time and again. The bayonet charge was just too much, as the 15th was obviously exhausted. Mr. Rambo does a much better job than I of recounting the events of that day. He described the whole scene in detail. I can remember him describing the heat rippling up from the ground and the weight of the rifle and gear.
