There was a W.T. Massingale who was Lt. with the Co. C, 53 AL Partisan Rangers. Don't know if that's your guy or not. What I would suggest (also with your Taylor as there are quite a lot), is to start with the National Park Service Soldier and Sailor listing. You can search for your soldier's name and then at the same time get some information about the regiments you find. Those usually contain the counties where they were formed. From that you can narrow it down to some stronger possibles. Once you have those, I would suggest footnote.com. It is a paid site but they do have a free trial period. There is a lot of information there. Taking your possibles that you found, you can further narrow it down by checking the records to see where these men enlisted to see if it matches up with the information that you already have. The 1860 census is also on there so that can be used to see where your guy was right before the war. Even with a name like Taylor, be sure to search for any and all spelling variations (Tayler, Taylar, etc). I've found that it pays to be quite creative with the spellings! Good luck in your search!
