Jeff, your post reminded me of an incident that I recalled reading about, and I was able to locate the source, which is New York at Gettysburg, volume I, p. 380, a historical sketch of the 45th New York. A Confederate captured at the McLean barn in the early afternoon of 1 July, by the name of Schwarz, recognized his brother, Corporal Rudolph Schwarz of Company B, 45th New York, among his captors and the two men embraced right there and then, not having seen each other since they left Germany many years previous. The Confederate was later recaptured that day by his own forces and he encountered some members of the 45th New York who had been captured in the town on the retreat of the Union 11th Corps late in the afternoon. He inquired about his brother Rudolph, but as fate would have it, during the intervening hours Rudolph had been killed in action. Now most of the men taken at the McLean barn were from O'Neal's Alabama brigade (particularly the 5th, 6th, and 26th regiments), although a few may have been from other commands, for instance sharpshooters from Iverson's NC brigade had also been posted in or near the barn at one point. However, the Soldiers and Sailors Database lists no Confederate by the name of Schwarz in any regiment that fought at Gettysburg on the first day.
