Re: John D.Shipp 6th Alabama Battalion

Mike --

Great story.

Jonathan D Shipp enlisted under Captain Isaac Henry near Clarksville, Tenn, Camp Cheatham, Nov 9, 1861. Officers and men formed 1st Company “H”, 42nd Tennessee Regiment. His company, the "Marshall Mountaineers", surrendered at Fort Donelson and were released on exchange at Vicksburg Sept 20, 1862. The company reorganized as Co D, 6th Alabama Battn, aka Norwood's Alabama Battn, Capt. Arthur B Carter. It was assigned to the regiment organized under Col. John Snodgrass Jr., as Co "G", 55th Alabama Regt. Ship has a service file with that command, but he is also reported with Co F, 49th Alabama Regt. He was captured at Port Hudson, La, May 27, 1863, exchanged at City Point, Va, July 6, 1863, released from a Petersburg hospital on July 21st, and returned to Alabama.

Receiving pay at Selma, Ala, Dec 17, 1863, Shipp appears on roll with the Exchanged Battn at Demopolis, Ala through Apr 1864.

Shipp mentioned service under Brig Gen Benjamin J Hill, formerly Colonel of the 35th Tennessee Regt and Provost Marshal of the Army of Tennessee. Several dispatches during the Tennessee Campaign mention his command as having a strength of about 150. His men had been scouting in middle Tennessee as early as mid-November. No rolls are on record, and we only know that Hill's command skirmished at Munford, Ala, after the capture of Selma and Montgomery.
