Re: 5th Georgia in Tennessee or Alabama?

Alan,

I agree, I believe they, the entire brigade, were in the Bridgeport/Stevenson area until, at least July/August of 1863. My question came as a result of the unit history printed in "America's Civil War" magazine, which stated they were in Shelbyville, TN during the Tullahoma campaign. Apparently, this is incorrect.

On a personal note, I'm attempting to narrow down, the date, at which, my ancestor, Volney Willoughby enlisted in the 5th Georgia Infantry. If you'll remember he is the gentlemen, for whom, I posted earlier the cards from "Unfiled Papers and Slips..." who was reportedly killed at Chickamauga on Sept. 19th as a member of Co. A of the 5th Georgia Infantry. If the 5th never returned to the Bridgeport/Stevenson, AL area after Murfreesboro, then it would be highly likely that he enlisted in November-December 1862. Of course, with this information, that Jackson's brigade, including the 5th Georgia, returned to Bridgeport after the battle, it is impossible to know when he joined the unit, other than it was sometime after Nov. 21, 1862 and before Aug. of 1863.

Thanks for the info and your help with this.

Jim
