It's possible William was a younger brother; the middle initials aren't the same for the father and the person who was killed in action in May 1864...I'll double check siblings of John and James and see if they had a younger brother. My own grandmother's initials were either written incorrectly or transcribed incorrectly in the 1910 census because I know I know HER name =) But, I'll check siblings just in case. The William Pinckard who enlisted in West Point, GA could have been a Georgia cousin of "my" boys who enlisted in '61. It was the dates of death being so similar to the father that made me shudder.
