Frank Blizzard - Lawrence County

My GG Grandfather, Thomas Franklin (Frank) Blizzard was said by family to have been a farrier who served in an Alabama command during the war. I have found no records that directly prove his service. However, his wife, Martha Stover Blizzard, applied for and received a pension from the State of Alabama based on his service. During a recent visit to ADAH, I secured a copy of her file. She states in her application that he was in the 4th Alabama. There is no indication of which branch of service. Since both Roddy's and Russell's 4th Cavalry commands included men from Lawrence County, I have to assume that he was with one of these two. My questions: Does anyone have any information available that would confirm his service in either unit (or any other)? If he served only as a farrier, would he necessarily have been enlisted and mustered into the unit?
An interesting side note: Martha Stover Blizzard's father, Obediah Stover, a possible brother or cousin, Abraham Stover, and a brother-in-law, William Pell all served in the 1st Alabama Cavalry, USV. Obediah Stover had to have been one of the oldest men in that command (or any other for that matter), having enlisted when he was 58 years old. His age most likely contributed to the fact that he spent most of the war in a hospital in Nashville, and died there a few weeks after the war ended.
