Re: Frank Blizzard - Lawrence County

Rick --

In relation to Brewer's summary of Russell's 4th Alabama Cavalry, you're correct for Speake and Lawrence County. However, the highest rank on record for Henry C Speake was Sgt Major, and no company assigned to A A Russell's PR Battalion was recruited in Lawrence County. It's rare, but Brewer occasionally made mistakes.

A A Russell's letter to the War Department concerning Speake mentions that he was born in Lawrence County, but a resident of Decatur. Speake originally belonged to Capt Wm H Taylor's Company D of Russell's Regiment. Other officers were Dickson Graham, William T Skidmore and Thomas J Dunlop. Skidmore was a resident of Oleander, Graham lived near Somerville, so this appears to have been a Morgan County company.
