J. W. Wheeler, Private, Company A, 26th Regiment Alabama Infantry, enlisted January 6, 1862 at Tuscumaca, Alabama by Capt. Moore for the war, admitted to Winder Hospital, Richmond, Va. September 23, 1862, returned to duty November 3, 1862, wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Va. May 2/3, 1863, receipted for an issue of clothing at Winder Hospital May 14 and on July 19, 1863, admitted Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond, June 11, 1863, gunshot wound both legs, furloughed October 7, 1863 for 40 days, recorded April 27, 1864* as absent without leave, no further records

* This is the one and only muster roll for Company A found in the records. Hence, we are not able to ascertain his total service

This regiment was consolidated about April 9, 1865 with the 1st, 16th and 45th Regiments Alabama Infantry and formed the 1st Regiment Alabama Infantry (consolidated)
