Three companies went upriver to Mount Vernon, and four down the bay to Fort Morgan. Fort Gaines wasn't involved in the state's initial seizure of Federal property.

Other AVC companies had been organized in Mobile during 1860. The eighth company in the 1st AVC Regiment may have been the "Gulf City Guards", Capt. William A Buck.
