Alan:

Thank you for your response. My ancestors name is Andrew Jackson Godwin b.1833 and showing up on the 1860 census living in Russell, Ala. My confusion is compounded by a few other family researchers who I am contacting about this. A few things:
1.) There was a gravestone ceremony sometime back and on the memorial it states that he served "with distinction "in the 1st Ala. Cav This gravestone ceremony was done by Sons of Confederate Veterans.
2.) An article was written by him in Confederate Magazine about the capture of Hood's supply train and his capture by the Union army where he does indeed mention contacting one of Roddey,s men as he supposed N.B. Forrest's command was protecting them but N.B. wasn't.
3.) A.J. filed for a Confederate Veteran's pension when he was 80 years old. He states on the application:

Born in Russell County,Ala in 1833-was a prisoner in Camp Chase prison, Columbus, Ohio til after Lee's surrender-* and here is something completely different- he says he enlisted 4/16/61 in Co. D , 2nd Ala. siege Artillery, with an addition of "heavy siege artillery" and that he served under" Capt. Tom Key: Finnegan,s Brigade".

I have not been able to find any info on line with regard to the 2nd Arty he mentions nor can I find anything linking him to the 1st besides what I've told you so far. The only Finnegan's Brigade I found was out of Florida. I will be giving the other two family researchers the info I've given you to see what they say and then I will re post. Thank you for your info and your consideration.
