Re: Dale County Alabama Home Guards

Herb --

Nothing to support any claim of service by this man. It would be helpful to know if he went by another name, as some family researchers suggest. He appears as Moses on the 1860 census for Coffee County, as well as the 1880 census for Pike County. Can't locate him at another time.

Capt George W Dawson recruited the Perote Guards, 1st Alabama Regiment, served for a year and went home. In late 1863 he recruited a company for service with the Conscript Bureau. Authority for these companies came from the Confederate War Department, not the State of Alabama, so they were not militia or home guards. During the last year of the war these companies were reorganized for service as Reserves, and reported to General Jones M. Withers in Montgomery. To the best of my knowledge only John C Brown's company turned in any kind of roll.
