It's just my opinion, but it appears that fewer men owned firearms then (1860) than now. Some militia rosters made note of any citizen who had a firearm that could be used in drill. Fewer than one in five are listed on a Bibb County roll that I recall. In 1860 men who could afford firearms for sporting purposes were somewhat limited.

Most firearms mentioned are called fowling pieces for hunting birds of one kind or another. As mentioned in other posts, deer and most other large four-footed creatures had been killed off in earlier years. Of course smaller game like rabbits were still available. Men of limited means often used traps to collect rabbits and other small game.
