Not sure of the exact dates, but the Dowdles settled in Pickens County in the late 1820's and the following is from the family history book.

"The woods were full of game and animals. They constituted a large part of their food for the first year. Aunt Sallie said one day the men were clearing the fields and a large doe deer came to the house. She and Jane caught it and cut its throat and dressed it. When the men came in they found a tub filled with nice deer meat. Uncle John said that when they needed help to do work on the place , they had to go many miles for it, and he told of how the wolves followed him and Andy and James Todd when they were going for help."

Notice that they did not shoot the doe.. and wolves in Picken County..
