Alan,
That is what is confusing about the history note, those mentioned (Andrew Agnew Dowdle (my great-grandfather) and James Todd Dowdle) went to war with the 41st Alabama as young men in 1862. So the story of the wolves is toward the end of the antebellum era. As for the women killing the doe with a knife I can't pinpoint the date.
