Deer and turkey would have been scarce during this time...obviously not "hunted out" but rarely seen. There are areas of Monroe County where wild game would have not been threatened especially in the north near Wilcox and along the rivers in the swamps. It would be my guess that the animals that populated the county in modern times are the product of animals that hid away in the remote areas along the Red Hills. During WWII, a Navy trainer crashed in Monroe and was not discovered until 1956 by a squirrel hunter. There are areas where game would have existed in numbers. I surmise the lowly coon and possum would have fed many families.
