The Sterling Newson of the 41st Tennessee resided in Bedford County, Tenn. and served in Company B with two other Newsomes, most likely kin.

There is a Texas Confederate pension application recorded for the widow of Sterling Newson, Mrs. N. J. Sterling, Childress County, Tx, application

Sterling Newson, Private, Company F, 51st Regiment Alabama Cavalry (Partisan Rangers), recorded on the February 13, 1864 muster roll* as absent, sent with Lt. Dobbs from Courtland, Alabama on Beef detail, never been paid, paroled at Talladega May 18, 1865, no other records

* This is the only company muster roll in the records, they were then located at Sevierville, Tennessee

Sterling Newson, age 28, 4th Sergeant, Capt. William L. Brown's Company, Tennessee Volunteers,** mustered into service November 4, 1861 at Camp. Trousdale for 12 months, furloughed to his home in Bedford Co., Tenn. from Camp Trousdale sick, December 21, 1861, still absent October 31, 1862, reduced to ranks, no further records

** This company subsequently became Company B ("The Richmond Gentrys", men from Bedford County) 41st Regiment Tennessee Infantry

Also in Company B were Private H. W. Newsom, age 18 and 1st Sergeant John Newsom, age 23
