Alan,
Dr. William W. McMillan practiced medicine at Scotland in Monroe County. He was a member of the Claiborne Guard and served as the company doctor when the Guard was stationed at Ft. Morgan. According to a family history, he returned to Monroe county and raised a company from the local militia, a group that had fallen into disorganization when he left for Ft. Morgan. Here, the history is unclear as there is no agreement among the different families of officers of who was in charge at a particular time. All agree that McMillan did raise a company and on September 14, 1861, the company traveled to Montgomery where they were accepted for Confederate service by Col. Thomas Watt and designated Co. H, 17th Ala. Inf. Whether they were an AVC unit is beyond my knowledge. I seem to have read that not all AVC units have a clear history to determine their status.
