Rachelle --

62nd Ala Reserves is not right.

May I attempt to explain the Junior Reserves? Young men in the 1st and 2nd Alabama Junior Reserves all enlisted at age 17 or younger. Based on The law of Feb 17, 1864, following one year in service, Junior Reserve commands would enter regular Confederate service. By that time most members were expected to have reached their 18th birthday. So at the end of February 1865, the 1st and 2nd Alabama Reserves became the 62nd and 63rd Alabama Regiments. Both regiments were captured in defense of Blakely on Apr 9, 1865. George Martin's post on the service explains how prisoners were sent to Ship Island, New Orleans, and then to Vicksburg MS. The fine print at the bottom of cards states that they were turned over for exchange at Camp Townsend (Big Black River, just east of Vicksburg) on May 6, 1865. Here they were received by the Confederate agent for exchange, Capt H A M Henderson, formerly of the 28th Alabama Regt.

Hopefully this explains how John P Young moved from the Junior Reserves to regular Confederate service at age 18 in 1865.

People should also understand that senior reserve commands would never enter regular Confederate service, being above the age required (45 to 50).
