The Florida Confederate Pension records has an extensive file on Hezekiah Byrd (Bird) and his wife, Mary Coleman. The claim was contentious at first approved then later placed on hold because two witnesses, both named Chandler, were not in the war and were deemed unable to verify service. See the letter dated 27 May 1922 from the Florida State Comptroller wherein the Alabama State Archives communicated with the comptroller and stated "Charlie Hooper's Company D, 5th Bn., Alabama Reserves (it reads 5th not 4th) but their records fail to show whether they were mustered into Confederate service".
