Re: Alabama soldiers sent to Mobile after Appomatt

Greg --

Don't remember the name, but an Alabama veteran who kept his parole included a similar account w/his pension application. In this case the soldier had returned home and learned that his brother was reported to be in a hospital in another state. He presented the parole for transportation to reach his brother. A Federal officer objected, believing that the parole had already been used. At the soldier's insistence, the officer relented, but only after clipping a corner from the parole. The officer remarked that he would know the soldier if he saw him again.

I have seen other accounts about U.S. transportation provided to Confederate soldiers on the basis of an 1865 parole.
