From the Report of Major John N. Slaughter, 34th Alabama Infantry, July 28, 1864, Vol. 38, No. 637:

“. . Sergeant Major Tinsley behaved with great gallantry, and unfortunately, fell near the enemy’s works. A young man of splendid mind, finished education, and heroic courage, his loss fills the regiment with gloom. The service has lost one of its bravest and most efficient non-commissioned officers, and society one of its brightest ornaments”.
